Boomers Beginning to See the Need for Home Modifications

As Baby Boomers continue to age, many are beginning to focus on making the home modifications that are necessary to provide the access and comfort they will need in the future. Many of them are helping care for their own parents and are becoming well aware of some of the everyday problems that are encountered in the home. Some are preparing and incorporating many of the changes they will need now, instead of waiting until they actually need them.

Builders and contractors are becoming aware of the needs of seniors and many are beginning to offer theuniversal design options in the initial floor plans when building a new home. Not only are the changes easier to incorporate at this stage, but are also a lot less expensive considering that remodeling costs range from just a few hundred dollars to $15,000 or more. Minor modifications such as lowering light switches, changing doorknobs to lever handles, and adding grab-bars can be just as beneficial, and can be done for just a few hundred dollars.

These future plans are also due to Baby Boomers preparing to make room for aging parents to move in.Designing a supportive home environment will benefit both the homeowners and their parents, as needs arise. Incorporating universal design concepts throughout the house will make it easier for residents and visitors tomanage their way around the home.
